The Spikenard plant, nardostachys jatamansi, is a flowering plant that is native to the alpine regions of the Himalayas, and part of the valerian family. It thrives at high altitudes and is usually found at heights of around 3,000 metres. The plant grows to around 90 centimetres tall and produces pink bell-shaped flowers, and hairy spikes shooting out from the roots. Spikenard essential oil is extracted from the roots by steam distillation.
The use of Spikenard essential oil dates back to ancient times when it was used for perfume, medicinal, and religious reasons in various countries stretching from India to Europe. It was regarded as one of the most precious oils and has been used in traditional Ayurvedic health practices for centuries.
Spikenard essential oil has a distinct woody, spicy scent, and when used aromatically it has an uplifting and relaxing effect. Topical application cleanses and purifies the skin, amongst other benefits.
