Myrrh comes from the Commiphora Myrrha tree, commonly seen in dry, desert regions of Africa and the Middle East. It is a small tree with a knotted trunk, white flowers, and very few leaves.
When the trunk of the tree is cut into, it releases a sap. The sap is left to dry and solidify, creating Myrrh resin. Steam distillation is then used to convert the resin into Myrrh essential oil.
Myrrh is one of the most widely used essential oils in the world, and its benefits have been valued for centuries by many cultures. It has a sweet, smoky, woody aroma, and its soothing properties are beneficial for both the skin and the mind.
Aromatic use helps to incite feelings of calm and peace, whilst topical application promotes a smoother, more youthful appearance of the skin. Internal use can help to cleanse the body and support the digestive system.
