The marjoram plant, origanum Majorana, is a herbaceous perennial that is native to the Mediterranean region, and part of the Lamiaceae family. The plant grows to between 30 and 60 centimetres tall with equivalent width and features fragrant, grey-green oval leaves. Its flowers are small and tubular, growing in pale pink or white clusters. Marjoram essential oil is taken from the leaves by steam distillation.
Marjoram has a long history of use both in and out of the kitchen. According to Greek mythology, Aphrodite goddess of love used it in love potions. The ancient Greeks used it to make wreaths and garlands, whilst the ancient Egyptians used it for healing, disinfecting, and food preservation.
As well as its many uses in cooking, marjoram has a warm, herbaceous aroma which promotes calming. It can also be used topically for its calming properties or taken internally to support the immune and cardiovascular systems.
