Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) is one of the species of cedar tree, which are all part of the Cedrus evergreen conifer family. Cedarwood oil is typically derived from the Eastern red or Pencil cedar.
The use of cedar oil has a long history. It is thought that cedar of Lebanon was the first essential oil extracted. The cedar tree was regarded as the Tree of Life by the Sumerians, while ancient tribes believed cedar wood was sacred. Cedarwood oil contains a number of compounds, including alpha cedrene, cedrol, beta cedrene, widdrol, and thujopsene, which contribute to its impressive health benefits.
