The Manuka plant is native to New Zealand, and part of the myrtle plant family – the same family as tea tree and eucalyptus plants. It begins its life as a shrub; however, it can grow into a tree as tall as 15 metres. You may have heard of manuka honey, which comes from the hives of the bees that pollinate the flowers of the manuka tree.
The Maori have used every part of the manuka plant for traditional health practices, and essential oil is extracted from the stems, leaves, and flowers by steam distillation.
Manuka essential oil has a herbaceous, sweet yet spicy aroma that is relaxing yet refreshing. Aromatic use promotes feelings of relaxation of peace. Manuka is also commonly used in meditation to help ground and centre energies. When applied topically, manuka helps the skin to achieve a smooth, healthy appearance, and improve the look of blemishes.
