Melissa essential oil comes from a herbaceous perennial plant called Melissa Officinalis. It is part of the Lamicaceae (mint) family, and native to West Asia and the Mediterranean. The plant grows to between 45 to 60 centimetres tall, with edible wrinkled, green oval leaves. Small white flowers grow in the leaf axils during the summer. Melissa essential oil is extracted from the leaves using steam distillation.
Melissa has been used since ancient times, due to its plethora of therapeutic benefits. Aromatic and topical use can promote calming and relaxation, soothing away tension and nerves, whilst topical application can also boost skin health. Melissa is also known for its antiviral and antimicrobial properties, and internal use can support the immune system.
Furthermore, Melissa can be used in the kitchen to add a sweet, citrusy flavour to a range of dishes such as ice cream, tea, and seafood dishes.
