The Vetiver plant, vetiveria zizanioides, is a perennial bunchgrass and part of the poaceae (grass) family. Vetiver grass is a vibrant green colour, and it grows straight and vertical up to around one and a half metres tall. The leaves are long and thin, and the flowers are a brown-purple colour. Unlike other grasses, the roots of the vetiver plant grow downward into a thick tangle underground.
Vetiver essential oil is extracted from the roots of the plant using steam distillation, and it contains more than 100 components.
With a sweet, smoky, earthy aroma, vetiver has become a popular ingredient in perfumes. Aromatic use also has a calming and grounding effect on emotions and helps to reduce feelings of anxiety and stress.
