Patchouli comes from the Pogostemon cablin plant, which is native to tropical regions of Asia and part of the Labiatae, or mint, family. It is a bushy herb with rigid stems that can grow as tall as 30 to 90 centimetres. The plant produces small white and pale pink flowers and green leaves with jagged edges.
The leaves of the Pogostemon cablin plant can be harvested several times per year. After harvesting they are dried before the essential oil is extracted from them by steam distillation.
The delightful scent of Patchouli makes it a popular ingredient in perfumes and colognes. Furthermore, aromatic use has a grounding effect, lifting the mood and balancing emotions.
Topical application offers a variety of skin benefits, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes, and promoting a smooth, glowing complexion. In addition, when applied to the hair patchouli essential oil helps to strengthen the hair and fight dandruff.
