Oregano is a herb that comes from the origanum Vulgare plant, a bushy perennial that is part of the Lamiaceae (mint) family. The plant features small white or pink/ purple flowers, and round, fragrant leaves. It thrives in areas of well-drained soil with full sun and dry to medium moisture.
Oregano essential oil is extracted from the leaves, with over 450 kilograms of Oregano required to produce just over 450 millilitres of essential oil.
With a long history of use in folk medicines across the world, Oregano is considered one of the most powerful and versatile essential oils, and one of the top herbs for healing. The herbaceous flavour makes it a welcome addition to a variety of savoury dishes, whilst its cleansing properties are ideal for use in household cleaners.
Internal use may benefit the immune system, the digestive system, and respiratory function, whilst topical application may help to treat warts, athlete’s foot, and more.
