The thymus vulgaris plant is a small evergreen perennial that is part of the mint family. The plant grows to between fifteen and thirty centimetres tall, and around forty centimetres wide. It is made up of woody stems covered in tiny hairs and grows ovate grey-green leaves with hairy undersides, and clusters of tiny pink and purple flowers. Thyme essential oil is extracted from the leaves via steam distillation.
Thyme has been used across various nations and cultures for centuries, including for ancient embalming practices, as incense in temples, and for warding off nightmares. It is commonly used in the kitchen to add a tasty flavour to a variety of dishes, however, there are many more uses for this versatile oil.
When used aromatically, thyme’s stimulating aroma lifts the mood whilst promoting concentration. Applied topically, it has a cleansing and purifying effect on the skin, whilst internal use provides support for the immune system.
