The Ginger plant is a herbaceous perennial, and part of the Zingiberaceae family the same family as Cardamom and Turmeric. The flowering plant is native to south China; however, it is also grown in other parts of Asia, West Africa, and the Caribbean.
It is a highly aromatic flowering plant, featuring thick roots, long shoots, narrow green leaves, and pale yellow flowers. Ginger essential oil is extracted from the rhizome the underground stem of the plant.
Ginger is commonly added to food to add delicious flavour, act as a preservative, and aid digestion. However, ginger tonics have been used by the Indians and Chinese for almost 5,000 years for the medicinal properties.
Ginger essential oil offers similar benefits to ginger but in a more potent form. It is a soothing, warming essential oil that can be taken internally to aid digestion and ease occasional nausea. Alternatively, its fresh, spicy aroma is ideal for diffuser blends.
