Lime essential oil comes from the Citrus Aurantifolia, or Key Lime plant. These are small, shrubby trees with thorns, flowers, leaves, and of course Key Limes. These trees are thought to be native to Southeast Asia, however, key limes gained popularity in the Florida Keys where they were grown and used to make Key Lime pie.
When the flowers on the tree blossom, this generally means that the Key Limes are ripe. Once the fruit is harvested, the peel is cold-pressed to extract Lime essential oil.
